A temporary Work Visa is a working visa that allows you to work and live in Australia for a specific period of time depending on your occupation.
Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa (SC482)
If you want to work in Australia, you can apply for a TSS Subclass 482 Visa. An employer can hire someone on this visa to fill a position for which they cannot find an appropriately skilled Australian worker. This visa allows you to work in Australia for up to 2 or 4 years, depending on your profession.

To apply for 482 visas you must
- A minimum of 2 years of work experience in the nominated profession.
- Have gained this experience within the last 5 years to apply.
- The applicant’s country of origin and nominated occupation must be assessed to determine if a skill assessment is required.
- Have a minimum English proficiency standard unless you are exempt from needing to show this.
- Have an approved Standard Business Sponsor (SBS) and
- The Sponsor applies for your Nomination.
Temporary Graduate visa (SC485)
International students who recently graduated with skills and qualifications relevant to Australia’s workforce needs may stay and work after completing their studies using this temporary graduate visa (Subclass 485). This is an attractive visa for foreign students. It allows VET graduates (who have completed at least two years of study in Australia) to work for up to two years and those with a higher education degree for up to four years.

To apply for 485 visas, you must
- Younger than 50 years old
- Hold an eligible visa
- Been on a student visa for the last six months
- Have a recent CRICOS-registered course qualification.
- You must select one stream only – you cannot change visa streams after you apply.
- You must provide the requested documentation when you submit your application.
If applicable, you are allowed to have your close family members reside with you while on this visa.
Skilled – Recognised Graduate visa (SC476)
To apply for the 476 skilled recognised graduate visa, you must have completed an engineering undergraduate or postgraduate degree from a specified overseas institution within the last two years and be under 31 years of age. With this visa, you may live, work, or study in Australia for up to 18 months.
To apply for a 476 visa, you must
- Younger than 31 years old
- Has completed an engineering degree at a specified educational institution in the last 2 years.
- Not the primary visa holder for subclass 476 or 485 visas before.
Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (SC491)
The skilled regional sponsored visa allows a state or territory government to nominate skilled workers to live and work in regional Australia. Those who are ineligible to apply for PR subclasses SC189 or SC190 due to low points or occupations not listed may find this visa the best alternative option.

- Main Applicant: A skilled worker can apply for this visa.
- Subsequent entrant: A Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa holder’s family member may apply for this visa.
To apply for 491 visas you must
- Be nominated by a state or territory government agency or an eligible relative to apply.
- Be eligible for a skilled occupation list.
- Have the required skills evaluated for the job.
- Pass the required number of test points.
Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) visa (SC188)
A state-nominated business owner, investor, or entrepreneur can use this visa to own and operate a company in Australia, conduct business and investment activities in Australia, or pursue an entrepreneurial endeavour in Australia. This is the first phase of a two-phase approach to permanent residence.
