Temporary Skills Shortage Visa (SC 186 - TRT)

Announcement

Starting November 25, 2023, Australia is introducing positive changes to its skilled migration visa system. These changes will impact both the Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) and the Employer Nomination Scheme (Temporary Residence Transition Stream) – subclass 186.

1. Temporary Skills Shortage (subclass 482)

For those holding a Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) visa in the Short-term stream, there’s excellent news. The Australian government is removing the limit on the number of
Short-term stream visa applications you can make within the country. This change applies to new applications submitted on or after November 25, 2023. If your Short-term stream visa
expires before that date, you’ll need to exit Australia to apply for a third Short-term stream TSS visa.

2. Employer Nomination Scheme (Temporary Residence Transition Scheme) subclass 186

Employers seeking to nominate employees will see several significant changes in the TRT stream nomination requirements. Employers can now nominate holders of all TSS visa streams, including Short-term and Labour Agreement streams. Australia has removed the need for nominated occupations to undergo assessment against a skilled migration occupation list. Instead, the nominated occupations must be listed in the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO). Moreover, TSS visa holders must now work in their nominated occupation for only two out of three years to be eligible for nomination by their employer in the TRT stream.

These changes will apply to new Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) and Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) nomination applications, as well as pending applications as of November 25, 2023. Furthermore, there are updates related to age exemptions for regional medical practitioners and high-income earning applicants aged 45 years and over to allow for a two-year pathway, as well as a conclusion of COVID-19-related age exemptions.
