Step by Step: how to apply for a student visa

Applying for a student visa might be a long and confusing process. Our recommendation is to contact an education agent who can advise and guide you during the process. The process for applying for a student visa is the same for onshore and overseas applicants:

  • Allow plenty of time before your course begins or your visa expires. For overseas applications, allow at least six months before the start date of your course.
  • Gather all the documents requested. Originals should be colour scanned. Note that some documents might need to be translated.
  • Apply for the visa
  • Arrange the health examinations (if required)

What are the eligibility criteria for the Student Visa?

In order to apply for a student visa, you must:

  • Be 6 years or older
  • Have a Letter of Offer and Certificate of Enrolment (CoE) from a college or university at a full-time course registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and courses for Overseas Students, CRICOS
  • Hold an Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the length of your stay in Australia.
  • Meet the health and character requirements
  • Show evidence of your English ability (English exams such as IELTS, TOEFL or PTE)
  • Have enough money to cover your first year
