SC 485 Advantages

2022 UPDATE:

There are changes affecting the conditions of all 485 graduate visas. Find out more here

The benefits of a Graduate 485 visa

Students who are eligible for a graduate visa (SC 485) must apply for that visa in order to take the advantage that this period is going to give you.

Either if you get an 18 or 24 months’ work visa, we recommend you don’t skip this visa.

There are two different SC 485, one is “Post-Study Work Visa” (485P) and the other one is “Graduated Skill Visa” (485G).

Differences between these two visas:

  • 485P is for students who graduated from a higher education program in Australia, either Bachelor (3 years) or Master (2 years). This visa is a 24 months work visa.
  • 485G is for students who graduated from a Diploma course of at least 2 years duration. This is an 18 months’ work visa.
    • Note: Vocational Diplomas are eligible provided that the professions are listed under MLTSSL.

Why graduated students SHOULD apply for SC 485 after completing their studies?

Students eligible for 485P might need 24 months for gaining extra time and:

  • Gain more work experience as usually they don’t have enough points to apply for PR straight after completing the qualifications.
  • Require PY (Professional Year) to get 5 extra points.
  • Improve the English score to add additional points.
  • Look for an employer to sponsor them.
  • Take a NAATI test to gain an additional 5 points.

Students eligible for 485G might need 18 months work visa for some of the following reasons:

  • Apply for full Skills assessments, which is around 1-year working full time.
  • Improve the English score to add additional points.
  • Take a NAATI test to gain an additional 5 points.
  • Look for an employer to sponsor you.

Therefore, being eligible for this visa subclass has many advantages that you should not skip. While you are working on your eligibility for PR (Permanent Residency), this time can be crucial.

Once you have your visa granted, we recommend you start working on all these requirements for the next options before is too late.
